The freedom we have and don't have

On an Independence Day when India celebrates its freedom many of us ask this question to ourselves. Are we really free? There is so much to be accomplished still. Freedom from terrorism, naxalism, corruption, poverty, crime and the list goes on. But to think of it we always overlook the basic freedom that we have and never appreciate it.

The government of India has given us many rights and made several laws that assure us of a freedom that we, as the people of India, didn't have earlier. Not talking about the pre-independence era when a citizen of India did not even have the right to talk freely but after independence when India gradually took control of its citizens.

There have been various changes in the society that came gradually helping in a persons rights, women empowerment, child rights to education, homosexual rights and RTI. These have indeed given a freedom that people only thought of.

If today we have certain limitations that we think should not be there, in the days to come, will diminish. Every change takes time. India has been free for 64 years now. The world has accepted India as a growing country in terms of economy as well as technology. All we need is trust in ourselves and each other.

The various problems faced by people today will also be sorted out in some years. No country is perfect. There are always challenges that need to be overcome only then one grows. Being patient and doing your bit is the key to an India that we dream of.

As it is said "The only area you are certain of improving is yourself," I would say leave aside what wrong others are doing for you cannot change them but work on improving yourself. If each one improves themselves then we will together be a nation that we would be proud of.

The heart wants what it wants. There’s no logic to those things.

Love never keeps a man from pursuing his destiny. If he abandons that pursuit it is because it wasn’t true love.

Trouble is a part of life and if you don’t share it you don’t give the person who loves you a chance to love you enough.

People are beautiful if you love them.

There is more hunger for love in this world than for bread.

Don’t expect a great day, make one.

What a caterpillar calls the end the rest of the world calls a butterfly.

Maturity has more to do with the kind of experiences you’ve had and what you’ve learnt from them and less to do with how many birthdays you’ve celebrated.

In the end we will remember not the words of our enemies but the silence of our friends.

True friendship is a plant of slow growth and must undergo and withstand the shocks of adversity before it is entitled to appellation.

How much is too much?

All of us have our limitations and boundaries but there is one thing that is unconditional in all of us. That one thing is embedded in our nature. It can be the ability to love or care. To be helpful or friendly. No matter how much we gain by displaying these feelings we still can't let go of them.

The question here comes 'how much is too much?' All these feelings or qualities are there in each of us but one of them is abundant. We normally limit ourselves and set a boundary that we won't go beyond this but with that one feeling we don't think twice before going beyond.

A help or a favor never goes unnoticed was said long ago. But what if every time you help someone or do a favor it goes unnoticed? Every time you love you don't get it in return?

In extreme cases, through experience, we learn to show these feelings wisely. When people don't get what they want they generally change themselves. They try and adopt an attitude which leaves them less hurt or keep ignoring the hurt.

But here again the question comes 'how much is too much?' If I change myself I will not be what I want to be anymore. People would argue that we change for our good. But are we not changing our thinking, our principles and ourselves because others don't reciprocate our feelings? Should I change just because people are not reacting in a way I want them to?

It is therefore important to know oneself. Know your limitations as well as boundaries. Even the most helpful or loving person gets hurt from the people they care about. It's all about patience, I guess. How much are you willing to take? When you can take no more and set your limitations then you will know how much is too much.

Changing Times

The youth of today in spite of having a traditional background have a new approach towards people who are different from them. Unlike earlier times, when the youngsters meet people from different cultures they accept them without any apprehensions. It's not what their parents, uncles, aunts or grandparents would generally do.

This change is visible in the metro cities of our country. While introducing ourselves we normally do not tell the name of our hometown, earlier this wasn't the case. People joining new offices or meeting new people introduce themselves with their educational background rather than their social or cultural background.

Not only social and cultural differences the youth are also more sensitive towards differently-abled people, treating a physically challenged person as normal and opposing anyone who discriminates them. This not only helps in changing their friends' attitudes towards such people but also their families' point of view is changed. If the need arises, youngsters today correct their elders if they make any comments about people different from them.

The world sees India as a land of diverse cultures and there are indeed many geographical differences between the people of India. But not letting these geographical differences come in the way of the unity of the country is of utmost importance.

India's mindset towards people from different areas or who look different has certainly changed and it is mostly because of the youth who have not incorporated discrimination in their lives. The need for this change was felt long back but any change in the society takes time to make its mark.

Now it doesn't matter whether you are a North Indian, South Indian or from North East. All that matters is your manner in which you present yourself. Everyone accepts well educated and friendly people and do not go into the family details. In fact informing about your family background or hometown can sometimes show you in the wrong light.

The changing attitude or one can say a more sensitive attitude towards people who are different is a welcome change. Accepting people as they are and treating them as one of us should be appreciated so that the younger generations to come also adopt this practice to make Indians more amiable amongst themselves.

You know you love someone when all you want is that person to be happy even if you are not a part of their happiness.

Find a person who will love you because of your differences and not in spite of them.

If he doesn't respect you he is not worth any of your time.

The heart does heal and you will love like this again. Except that when you do you’ll deny that you ever loved like this before.

Immature love says, "I love you because I need you." Mature love says, "I need you because I love you."

Instead of waiting for life to get better do something about it.

Someday you will look back on this and it will all seem funny.

If you can laugh at yourself you are going to be fine.

You never know when you are making a memory.

To be old and wise you first have to be young and stupid.

In order to keep a true perspective of one’s importance everyone should keep a dog that will worship him and a cat that will ignore him.

The reason why worry kills more people than work is that more people worry than work.

We don’t see things as they are. We see things as we are.

That which does not kill you will ultimately make you stronger.

Never ever let a member of the opposite sex make you compromise your standards.

It’s funny how someone can come in and go out of your life so quickly, yet leave footprints and memories in your heart forever.

If instead a gem or even a flower we should cast the gift of a loving thought into the heart of a friend that would be giving as angels give.

Friends are those rare people who ask how we are and then wait to hear the answer.

No garden is ever really complete without fragrant flowers to make it sweet. No life is ever full or fair without a true and dear friend to share or care.

A friend is someone who does not judge by appearance or action, who accepts all in you and loves you for it.
