Together We Did

4th Oct '10

The grand opening of the Commonwealth Games was appreciated by one and all. With all confidence I can say that every Indian who watched the opening ceremony felt proud of being an Indian. The spectacle of the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium completely took me by surprise. It may be the infrastructure of the stadium, the aerostat, the lighting, the fireworks or the amazing formations by the performers but it will all stay with me for a very long time to come.

The opening ceremony was definitely a success. People who viewed it all over the world appreciated it despite all the criticism that preceded it. India did arrive in the world scene and how. Creativity and professionalism was seen in the various acts put up by the performers. The drummers from various parts of the country managed to give the ceremony a festive start. The aerostat stole the show completely right in the start with the katputlis dancing around it. Swagatam was another surprise as children danced in the formation of folded hands as Hariharan performed the song.

The spectators in the stadium also reminded from time to time that they are there. They shouted, hooted, whistled and cheered. The various speeches by Suresh Kalmadi, Prince of Whales and the President of India were appreciated by the spectators. The closing show of various folk dancers and the Indian Journey showcased the whole of India within the confines of the stadium.

For me the best was the ambience created in the stadium with the use of lighting and projection on the aerostat. The act of Guru Shishya Parampara under the Bodhya Tree was simply mesmerizing. I was in complete awe during that performance. The performance of A R Rahman in the end was a perfect end to the ceremony and in that too the spectators provided support by singing Jai Ho along with Rahman.

After seeing the ceremony and truly loving it I have forgotten all the criticism that we were exposed to before this. I completely forget all the problems that were caused to the public and all the negative media publicity. The success of the opening ceremony very strongly teaches us that together we can overcome hurdles and put up a great show. Patience and confidence can do wonders like the Opening Ceremony of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 in Delhi.

All the learning, patience, skills and strength is required in the journey but it all comes to be worth if the end turns out to be better than expected...
